Clarence Porter - Pastel
Clarence Porter - Pastel
Starts: 7:00 pm
Ends: March 15, 2024 - 9:15 pm
Location: DVAC Zoom
Description: DVAC Friday Night Meetings - Clarence Porter - Pastel
Clarence Porter’s philosophy: "My job as an artist is to see and translate my visual and emotional moments into pieces of art that allow the viewer to see, feel and be in my moments, giving the viewer pause to reflect on the moments in time that I cherished, frozen in pigments"
Clarence will open with a short PowerPoint presentation charting his early days as a freelance commercial illustrator through to the present and how he came to work with the brilliant colours of soft pastels. Questions are welcomed.
He will give an in-depth description of how his philosophy leads to the process he uses to develop themes for his paintings.
Through a demonstration, Clarence will show and explain his process for working with soft pastels: why he works on sanded surfaces, why he uses an under-painting, why he works from hard pastels to soft pastels, and why he works from dark to light. Again, questions are welcomed.
BIO Clarence worked in the Toronto advertising world as a graphic designer/art director until leaving to become a freelance commercial illustrator: a career move that spanned 30-plus years of creating illustrations for everything from packaging and logo designs to children’s books and magazine editorials, while working in a wide range of mediums. After relocating to Hamilton, he started working with pastels for his own pleasure and in 2006 Clarence was juried into the Pastel Artists Canada’s Purely Pastels Exhibition at the Art Gallery of Hamilton where he received an Honorable Mention. That was the impetus needed to continue working with pastels and he hasn’t looked back.
Clarence is represented by Earls Court Gallery in Hamilton and his work has been collected locally and internationally. He received his Master Pastel Artist of Canada (MPAC) signature designation from Pastel Artists Canada and was elected a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA). He is also a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and the International Association of Pastel Societies.
Clarence recently retired from teaching at Sheridan College where he enjoyed eight amazing years working with creative young minds. He is now a part-time instructor at the Dundas Valley School of Art, as well as an occasional instructor at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and the Richmond Hill Arts & Cultural Centre. Ongoing sources of inspiration for Clarence are the live and Zoom pastel demonstrations and private mentoring sessions he instructs all over Canada and North America. He finds collaboration with other artists using different media rewarding and enriching too. Denise Antaya - Oil Landscapes
Denise Antaya - Oil Landscapes
Starts: 7:00 pm
Ends: March 22, 2024 - 9:15 pm
Location: DVAC Zoom
Description: DVAC Friday Night Meetings - Denise Antaya - Oil Landscapes Denise Antaya will talk about her art, her methods, and her love of nature and fascination with light.
Denise Antaya’s roadmap to success avoids highways, and that’s the way she likes it.
Growing up in the country makes her appreciate the simple things, the beauty in nature. She didn’t spend her childhood on the highway, but back roads in the countryside, sometimes following a slow-moving tractor. She took time to enjoy the sunshine, the surrounding fields, the shapes of the clouds in the sky. These are things that formed her love of landscapes. The everyday themes in Denise Antaya’s oil paintings combine her love of nature and her fascination with light and how it transforms an often overlooked scene. Her subjects range from season to season but almost always represent the natural environment untouched by man. She can capture a moment and even transport one back to a quieter, simpler time.
Her process starts with an underpainting, called a brunaille. It’s meticulously rendered, as the most important part of the process. Here the composition, value structure and drawing is sorted out, before the complication of colour is added. It’s a lot easier to change it at this stage in the process. No amount of paint can correct a bad drawing or poor composition. It’s the foundation needed to create a successful painting. Once she determines that everything is where it needs to be, she adds colour. Her plein air paintings work hand in hand with her studio work. Being out in nature where you see the nuances of colour help compensate for the drawbacks of photography when used.
To Antaya, painting the landscape is relevant. Everyone can appreciate nature, but it’s not the only reason she does this. It’s a way to document “how it was”. She loves the beauty of nature, unchanged by man, but the environment is being forever changed. Farms are being bought for development, old barns torn down, hundred-year-old trees disappearing. It’s a way to remember, often brings back simpler times when the world was not so fast paced. It’s a visual reminder of where we were, and also sometimes of where we are heading. The landscape is a never ending source of inspiration, one that will never end with its ever-changing moods and complications. It’s a lifetime endeavour she hopes to never master!
