Dinesh Subramanian – Friday Night Guest – September 13, 2024

(Submitted by Sylvia Le Roy)

Dinesh is a relatively new watercolour artist who has chosen to paint Toronto cityscapes and landscape. He comes from a digital world where he works in 3D film media. His progress as a WC artist is truly meteoric and he has developed a level of skill that is amazing.

Dinesh started by showing us his paper, brushes and colours. While we voted on which 2 WC sketches he would do in the time allotted he got his paint palette ready. He starts with a rough pencil sketch on the paper and works on dry paper. Because he was doing a demo on Zoom he lowered his paper to the tabletop. He usually works at a 45 degree angle to the table to allow gravity to do its work.

Next he lays in his lightest lights and begins to paint in the focal point. He looks for warmth where he can find it and adds it to the cool washes. The rest of the scene tumbles in amazingly fast. He pays attention to value, temperature, chroma, perspective and drawing. The finishing touches bring contrast into play to make the sketch come to life.

Here are some resources that Dinesh shared:
