Samantha Williams-Chapelsky – Friday Night Guest – January 13, 2023 

Samantha Williams-Chapelsky completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Alberta in 2009, with distinction, majoring in painting and art history.  She has been exhibiting her art extensively for the past 15 years worldwide. Her paintings are included in numerous corporate and private collections and are represented in select commercial art galleries.  She is a Golden Working Artist who paints large scale abstracted landscapes with a highly intuitive approach, gathering inspiration from the Alberta landscape.

For this presentation she worked on two demos on birch panels, the first using molding paste and the second using fiber paste to create texture .  Before starting her painting she does a small scale version (sometimes from leftover paint scraped onto paper) to create an interesting image study, then preps her panel with a Gesso matte medium.  On her palette she lays down globs of molding past then using liquid acrylics she mixes her colors into the paste.  Drawing in shapes (she prefers to draw in only 5 shapes) and determining the horizon line (never in the middle of the canvas) she then adds paint using a palette knife, working top to bottom on the panel or canvas.  Some of her other tools are a color shaper (or spatula) for mark making and the palette knife for texture. 

Samantha’s presentation proved very valuable to acrylic painters and watercolor painters alike as she gave us much information on using tools and techniques in both mediums.
